Binnenbanden??

Ik heb een tijdje niet meer met de fish gereden, maar het was tijd voor nieuwe voorbanden. Ik had zelf de nieuwe banden besteld. 185 70 r14, voor op de standaard 5.5J velgen. Ik ben hiervoor naar de bandencentrale gegaan om ze te wisselen. Eenmaal op de brug zegt de monteur (geen verstand van Mopars) dat ik binnenbanden nodig heb want dit zijn "speciale velgen" anders kan hij ze niet monteren. Er staat tubeless op al mijn banden, en het ventiel zit vastgeklemd in de velg en hangt er dus niet los in zoals bij een binnenband. Toch zegt hij dat ik binnenbanden nodig heb.

Uiteindelijk na uitspoor te hebben afgesteld naar toespoor, naar huis gereden met de oude voorbanden :sucks:
Kan iemand mij vertellen of ik nu echt binnenbanden nodig heb? :hmmm: Want ik begrijp het niet meer. Alvast bedankt.

If your rims have these beads, you do NOT need inner tubes. They will keep the tires seated when you steer around corners.

Thanks for the image, I can't see it at the moment because the tires are still on the rims but I'm sure my rims have these beads. They are stock Mopar rims and all the other ones that I have seen have it. So I guess that he could have replaced the tires after all...

Vaak moet je met binnenbanden je gat van ventiel opboren naar 14 mm of soms groter.
Met stockcar rijden we altijd met binnenbanden en dat gaat prima
Ik werk met plezier.

Heb de nieuwe banden vandaag laten monteren bij een ander bedrijf. Er zaten gek genoeg toch binnenbanden in de oude tubeless banden. Maar ik wilde ze er niet per se terug in. Deze monteur was het daar gelukkig ook mee eens en heeft de banden gelijk omgewisseld. En met stockcar zie ik het nut inderdaad.

De achterbanden trouwens, zijn Firestone S/S Radial 245 60 r14 met het oude logo en letters. Deze hebben beide een DOT code van 1953. Leek me wel interessant om er even bij te zeggen.

You are going to drive around on 65 year old tires? :?

For the age, it doesn't sound like a good idea indeed. The tires show small dry rot cracks but as long as they won't get too hot it shouldn't be a problem. I'm not driving long distances with it. I wanted to replace them earlier but tires of this size are expensive. I have found brands that are still making 235 60 r14 size tires though which are way cheaper, so I'll try to get these eventually. The front tires were really in bad shape, so I'm glad these are replaced.

The danger with old tires is that even if they look pretty good on the outside, they can blow into pieces in a second when you are driving and damage your fender and what not and you might even crash your car.

To me personally, even if tires are expensive... it's still cheap insurance to keep my car (and the people in it) safe. According to the experts, a tire should be replaced when it's about 8 years old, regardless of what it looks like and if it still has good thread.

A tire is made out of a combination of natural and synthetic rubber and the integrity of the tire is becoming comprised about 8 years after coming out of the mold.

Yes you're right. I don't mean to say that I drive it every day without getting too hot. I don't drive it much at all either, for the reason you are saying. It is indeed not a risk I want to take. It is weird that someone puts tires on a car of this age. They were already 16 years old when the car was new.

It's your car and your money, do as you please.

My car and my life are worth more to me than what new tires cost, plus the fact that your insurance probably will not pay a cent if they find out that the damage was caused because a 65 year old tire blew into pieces.

The complete DOT code with the date code is only mentioned on one side of the tire. The side with the date code has 3x4 digits. The other side has 2x4 digits.

Year of manufacture is never mentioned complete, like "1953", but is coded as either one or two digits of a 3 or 4 digit code. If you find the 3x4 digit code, the last 3 or 4 digits are the date code. 3 digits if the tire is manufactured before 2000 and 4 if it is manufactured after 2000.

For the 3 digit code the last digit is the year, the number being the second digit of the decade it was manufactured in. As this can lead to the fact that you can identify a tire as being 1, 11, 21, etc years old (and probably due to the century change), the date code was changed after 2000 to 4 digits with the last 2 digits being the year of manufacture.If you have tires with raised white letters (RWL), the complete DOT code is usually on the side that has the RWL.

I doubt that the tires are from 1953, however, I know for a fact that the tires on this particular car are very old.

Thanks for the information Wishnu. The DOT isn't indicated complete as "1953" indeed, The complete DOT is: VNR2 TM3053. Same DOT on both tires. So according to the correct way of reading the DOT, I read it as 30th week, 1953. The last two digits being the year. I doubt it to though, even tire centers don't know it. At other places they do really think they are 65 years old. So I don't know. But let's just say indeed they are very old.

The DOT code looks similar to a tire made before 2000, as a tire made in 1953 would not have a DOT code syntax used after 2000 ;) Therefore the year cannot be the '53'. So the date code would be the last 3 digits. 053 would be the fifth week (05) of at least 1993, or 1983, or 1973. Most likely the tires are from 1993. Anyway, old and in need of replacement ;)
